As fellow contemplatives, we explore what it means to turn our spiritual sight to our relationship with money: how we perceive it, how we use it, how it can be a vehicle for love. To give you a window into this exploratory work, we have prepared Stepping In: A Wisdom & Money Reader for you.
Too often we have let our culture convince us that money our relationship with money is somehow outside of the realm of the holy or not subject to the work of the Spirit. And yet when we bring a contemplative approach to our stewardship of financial wealth, we find that Love can use money as a means of healing and for the work of justice. Wisdom & Money is committed to this contemplative path of transforming our relationship with money, and I commend it to you heartily.
Money Questions
Money is an important dimension of our lives. Our relationship with it and our financial choices can become doorways to transformation when we engage with money with others in the context of contemplative practice. Such questions include:
- Is there more to stewardship than giving more?
- What do I do with money that comes from investments I consider immoral?
- How much should I give to my children?
- How much is enough?
- How can I shift places where I feel stuck?
Wisdom & Money carries the tradition that our cash is Christ, that we are stewards of our resources and that our money is how God’s work can get done. I’ve been involved through the Boston Circle, a group of friends who, over many years and many retreats, have shared the adventure of connecting our money and our faith. Our love and trust for each other has grown along the way. Wisdom & Money doesn’t have a formula, doesn’t pick stocks or advise what percentage is enough, doesn’t fundraise. Instead Wisdom & Money speaks of gift as a verb; the group gifts, we gift, God gifts. Social justice needs loving and gifting, simple as that.
