I was relating to money in a very day-to-day way.
When I thought about giving, I focused on cash flow—what was coming in, what was going out, what I could adjust month to month. Years ago, my wife Susie and I had set up a donor-advised fund (DAF), both for tax efficiency and to support missionaries and organizations we cared deeply about. But over the last three years, I stopped actively engaging it. It faded from view. I wasn’t really holding it in my awareness as a resource.
Something opened in the retreat space.
Something opened in the Wisdom & Money board retreat space. We spent time building spiritual community and engaging in our core practices. On day two, we were led in a quiet, guided meditation around giving toward Wisdom & Money’s Five-Year Vision; we were invited to listen inwardly and respond. In that setting—grounded, attentive, full of the Circle’s presence—I began to feel something shift.
My frame moved from “money in, money out” to a longer horizon.
The question of a five-year gift took me out of my day-to-day mindset. Instead of asking what I could give now, I found myself asking: What change do I want to see in the world? My thinking became more expansive—what I’d call “transtemporal.” And in that shift of awareness, I saw it: there was this other resource—the DAF—that had been there all along, but outside my field of attention.
I realized some of my money was simply… stuck.
Not because it wasn’t available, but because I wasn’t seeing it. The DAF had become a kind of hidden-in-plain-sight resource. And as it came back into view, I felt a deep knowing: let it move again. Not just as a financial decision, but as an expression of love working through what’s already been given.
