Access to resources shape social movements in the U.S. These resources – time, labor, and particularly money – are vital to organizational survival and political success. Exploring who gives, how we give, and the effects of the giving have an impact on effecting sustainable justice and thereby are important political questions to address.

This highly participative workshop provides an opportunity to experience how the Be Present Empowerment Model and Living in the Flow of Gift allow wisdom and compassion to inform our money interactions. The work of Wisdom & Money and Be Present is based on the core principles that funding and fundraising are political, and that all people from all backgrounds are contributors to and benefit from the work of social justice.

Members of Be Present and Wisdom & Money will share their candid stories and lessons learned on how to:

  • Encounter money as a doorway to spiritual transformation.
  • Establish authentic relationships of trust and mutual responsibility.
  • Identify and facilitate issues of race, gender, class, and power that affect fund giving and receiving practices while raising money for shared visions.
  • Become “partners with” rather than “donors to” communities.
  • Have honest conversations about money – how one thinks and feels about money and people who have or don’t have money – and how personal experiences shape definitions of self and others.
  • Improve relationships between social movement organizations and foundations.
